LS STANDING RIGGING

Light Speed Rigging utilizes the most advanced materials and build techniques, mostly used in the aerospace industry to create rigging cables that are the best and most reliable in the world.

Light Speed utilizes two primary uni-directional fibers in building structural standing rigging.

 

Carbon Fiber and Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE). These fibers have been exclusively chosen to provide product longevity that exceeds 15 years. Our Carbon Fiber standing rigging product is known as LS CARBON, while our UHMWPE product is called LS PHOTON.​

​​There are more similarities between these two products than differences, in that both offer superior weight savings and a working life span over 15 years.  The differences are in the dimensional stability.  The term EA is used to designate the elastic elongation of a cable.  The E is the Young’s Modulus of the material which is a constant for any given material and the A is simply the cross-sectional area of the cable.  LS Carbon has a higher EA value compared to LS Photon, because the Young’s Modulus of carbon is greater than that of UHMWPE.  This difference in Young’s Modulus creates a clear separation in the product offering.

The stainless-steel grade, Nitronic 50 has traditionally been used for rod rigging has become the industry standard for performance yachts, and the corresponding EA (elastic elongation) of this material is what yacht designers and spar builders consider when designing a performance yacht.  LS Carbon has a designed EA value matching and, in some cases, exceeds that of rod rigging, whereas LS Photon’s EA values match that of compact strand wire or any given size.  This differential sets the two products apart, one being high end race orientated in LS Carbon and LS Photon being more suitable for performance cruising boats.
